Is Science Losing Its Place in Our Society ?

India has always been a land of knowledge. From Aryabhata and Sushruta to C.V. Raman and Homi Bhabha, science and curiosity once defined our civilizational identity. Yet today, a troubling question demands our attention: Is science slowly losing its place in Indian society?

From Knowledge Seekers to Noise Consumers

We live in an age of instant information, yet genuine scientific understanding is becoming rarer. Public conversations are dominated by political drama, religious polarisation, celebrity culture, and social media outrage. Meanwhile, breakthroughs in science and technology, whether from Indian labs or global research institutions, rarely become part of mainstream discussion.

Turn on prime-time news in India. How often do we see serious debates on climate science, artificial intelligence, space research, biotechnology, or public health? Science is pushed aside unless it can be sensationalised or politicised.

The Education Paradox

India produces millions of graduates every year, yet innovation remains limited. Our education system largely rewards memorisation rather than curiosity. Students are trained to clear exams, not to ask questions. Research is often treated as an academic obligation rather than a national mission.

Despite having world-class institutions like IITs, IISc, and ISRO, cutting-edge research is still concentrated in a few pockets. Many of our brightest minds leave the country in search of better research ecosystems, funding, and academic freedom. This “brain drain” reflects not a lack of talent, but a lack of support for science.

Where Are the Scientists in Public Life?

In many countries, scientists actively shape public discourse. In India, scientists rarely appear as influential voices in mainstream media or policy discussions. When scientific opinions clash with popular beliefs, science is often sidelined.

Superstition, pseudoscience, and misinformation spread faster than verified facts. From miracle cures to astrological predictions, irrational ideas often receive more attention than evidence-based reasoning. This weakens scientific temper, a value explicitly mentioned in the Indian Constitution.

Science vs. Identity Politics

One of the biggest challenges is our obsession with identity-based debates. Discussions around caste, religion, and political loyalty consume enormous mental and emotional energy. While social justice and equality are important, they should not come at the cost of intellectual stagnation.

Science does not belong to any religion, caste, or ideology. It belongs to humanity. A society that prioritises division over discovery risks falling behind in a rapidly advancing world.

A World Moving Ahead Without Us

Globally, nations are investing heavily in:

  • Artificial Intelligence and automation

  • Quantum computing

  • Climate science and renewable energy

  • Biotechnology and genome editing

  • Space exploration and deep science research

India participates in some of these areas, yet public awareness remains minimal. Scientific progress cannot thrive in isolation from society—it needs cultural respect, funding, discussion, and encouragement.

The Real Crisis: Scientific Awareness

The core issue is not a lack of intelligence or resources. The real crisis is scientific awareness. Many children grow up without role models in science. Scientists are rarely celebrated the way actors, influencers, or politicians are.

Without curiosity, questioning, and critical thinking, innovation becomes impossible.

Change Must Begin at the Grassroots

Waiting for governments alone to fix this problem is unrealistic. True change begins at home, in schools, and in communities.

  • Encourage children to ask “why” and “how.”

  • Promote science communication in local languages

  • Support science clubs, fairs, and citizen science initiatives

  • Challenge superstition respectfully with reason and evidence

Science must be made accessible, relatable, and exciting.

Reclaiming Science as a Cultural Value

India does not lack potential; it lacks prioritisation. Science must once again become a cultural value, not just a career option. When society respects evidence over emotion and inquiry over ideology, progress follows naturally.

The question is not whether India can lead in science.
The real question is whether we, as a society, are ready to let science lead us.

Qriosity, under the umbrella of I'M Learner Initiative, is nation-wide talent hunt quiz being organized by The Scientific Children. The sole purpose of Qriosity is to find out the hidden talent of the country and nourish them for the improvement of students, education, society, and the nation as well.



Prizes and scholarship:

           

The winners will be awarded cash prizes and one-year scholarship as follows:



First Prize:                   ₹ 1,11,000 (₹51,000 Cash + 5000/month scholarship for 1 year)

Second Prize:               ₹ 75,000    (₹21,000 Cash + 4500/month scholarship for 1 year)

Third Prize:                  ₹ 55,000    (₹13,000 Cash + 3500/month scholarship for 1 year)

Quiz Pattern/Syllabus:



The question paper will be of objective type. It will be consisting of 50 questions related with the following topics:

A.      Basic Mathematics:

B.      General Science:         The questions will be related to day to day science

C.      General Aptitude:       Mental ability and Reasoning type questions



Pattern, Time Period & Marking:



·         The quiz question paper will be based on mobile app/ web platform only.

·         Time period for the test will be 50 minutes only.

·         For each correct answer, you will be awarded 3 marks and for each wrong answer 1 mark will be penalized. Non-attempted questions will not be evaluated.

Ranking Method:



The rank will be based on the marks scored by you in the test. Marks scored in test will be the main criteria for ranking, in case of tie there will be another deciding factor like Wrong attempt, Age, form submission date etc.*

Science in Deficit

We are trying something meaningful for the younger generation to motivate them and to spark genuine interest and curiosity in the basic sciences. Over the past few years, a clear trend has emerged: a large number of students are striving to secure positions in the private sector. Unfortunately, only a small fraction of them succeed in fulfilling these dreams.

Most students choose courses like B.Tech and similar professional programs for higher studies. They invest enormous amounts of money, time, and effort, hoping to secure private-sector jobs. However, many end up in positions that offer modest salaries, often barely enough to sustain a decent quality of life.

At the same time, there is a serious shortage of students with the aptitude and passion to pursue basic sciences as a full-time career. This is unfortunate, because careers in basic sciences can offer respectable jobs, competitive salaries, intellectual fulfillment, and a stable lifestyle, benefits that contribute not only to individual growth but also to the long-term development of our country.

We all desire good teachers, strong academic environments, and schools that can help India build its own foundation in science and technology. But this vision cannot be achieved unless we educate and encourage people in the basic sciences. Today, there is a significant shortage of capable and motivated teachers, while many young people struggle simply to find employment to survive.

The message is clear: it is time to return to the fundamentals. It is time to move toward basic sciences, the core fields of knowledge where individuals can grow intellectually, contribute meaningfully to society, and actively participate in the development of India.

By strengthening our commitment to basic sciences, we invest not only in careers but in the future of our nation.

Need For Scientific Education......

 

In this era of modernization, science plays a crucial role, especially for developing countries like ours. Yet the ground reality is astonishing and deeply concerning. Why are we still unable to make significant progress in higher and advanced innovative research? Has the standard of our higher education declined so drastically that even after 85 years of independence, we have not produced a Nobel Prize winner in the sciences? Is higher education collapsing day by day?

Another uncomfortable question arises: why are the Nobel laureates of 1968, 1983, and 2009 not Indian citizens, despite being of Indian origin? Yet we proudly claim to be intellectuals, educated people, and leaders who constantly compare India with the US and the UK on every minor issue. I wonder whether these people have ever truly observed or tried to understand those societies: their public discourse, their academic debates, their documentaries, their cinema, or their intellectual culture. I am sure most of them have not.

Today, the world is talking about genome editing, brain mapping, artificial intelligence, detecting subatomic particles, gravitational waves, life-and-death decisions coded into algorithms, CRISPR technology, invisible realities, hidden dimensions, and even brain-to-brain communication.

Are we updated? Are we even aware of these developments?

Over the past few days, I discussed these topics with several so-called ganmanyas (respected individuals). Many of them did not even know the basic meaning of these terms. Do our news channels report ongoing scientific research? Hardly, unless a UFO appears to boost their TRP ratings.

So why is this happening?

Because we are deeply occupied with endless debates around “Dalits,” “Muslims,” and “Hindus.” Today, these have become the universal topics of discussion. Try, just once, to rise above these words and labels, and I am certain you will discover another, far more fascinating world beyond them.

If you genuinely want to see society grow, change the subject of your conversations. Think, question, and apply your mind to progressive ideas.

If you truly desire the welfare of humanity and want your society to be modern and progressive, you must walk hand in hand with science. Tie a knot with science.

Even today, a vast population lives in superstition and witchcraft, lacking even basic scientific understanding. If we perform a root cause analysis of these problems, we will find one fundamental issue: a lack of awareness, a lack of knowledge, and the inability to correctly identify and appreciate science.

I do not expect much from governments or political leaders anymore. Waiting for change through them alone is futile. Change must begin at the individual level.

If we educate our children properly—nurture their curiosity, scientific temper, and values—many of these problems will gradually resolve themselves. It may take time, but at least we must try.

Let's start contributing, in whatever capacity we can, to society and to science.
